Rules and conditions for participation


  1. Candidates
    The OSM International Composition Prize is open to composers:
    1. Of all nationalities;
    2. Aged 40 years or less on June 30, 2006.

  2. Submitted works
    1. Each candidate may submit only one work;
    2. Excerpts from works (e.g. 2 of 3 movements) will not be accepted;
    3. The work must be composed for a minimum of 45 players and must not exceed the following orchestration:
        3 flutes (the 3rd may double on the piccolo or on the Alto flute)
        3 oboes (the 3rd may double on the English horn)
        3 clarinets (the 3rd may double on the Bass clarinet or saxophone)
        3 bassoons (the 3rd may double on the Contrabassoon)
        4 horns
        3 trumpets
        3 trombones
        1 tuba
        Timpani (1 player)
        Percussions (3 performers)
        1 keyboard (1 player may double-up)
        1 harp
        Strings (14-12-10-8-6);
    4. The composition may include a soloist to be selected by the OSM; this player may be chosen from the OSM's principals. Instruments eligible for solos include: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, harp, percussion, timpani, and piano;
    5. Works including singers or choir are not eligible;
    6. The composition may include pre-recorded music in digital format;
    7. The duration of the work may not exceed 20 minutes;
    8. The submitted work MAY:
        - Have had a premier performance, but not before 2003;
        - Have been specially commissioned;
        - Have been revised;
    9. The submitted work MAY NOT:
        - Have been commercially recorded;
        - Have received an award from another national or international competition for composition.

  3. Enclosures to submit
    1. The orchestral work must be submitted as a bound conductor's score in three (3) copies. Do not send original manuscripts or orchestral scores. Any documents that are not sufficiently legible will be refused;
    2. It is recommended, but not essential, to send three (3) recordings of the work (in full or in part). This may be a recording of an acoustic orchestra, a piano arrangement, or a MIDI sequence. Only CDs and cassette tapes will be accepted;
    3. The title of the work, the title of each movement (if applicable), and the timing of the work must appear on each copy of the score and on each copy of the recording of the work;
    4. All documents must be sent anonymously. Scores and recordings must not be signed, display the name of the composer, or, by way of any other indication, divulge the identity of the composer to jury members;
    5. The scores and recordings must be accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the following documents:
        - The official application form available on the Web site of the OSM International Composition Prize (www.composition.osm.ca);
        - A biography (300 to 400 words) and a short curriculum vitae, in French or in English;
        - A black and white photo of the composer;
        - A declaration by the composer that the submitted work has not been performed prior to 2003, recorded commercially, or won any award in a national or international competition for composition;
        - A photocopy of the applicant's passport;
    6. The front cover of the score, the recording, and the sealed envelope must display a short printed text (e.g. a proverb, a quotation or a pseudonym) to serve as a means of identification that does not, however, offer any hint to jury members as to the composer's real identity;
    7. Application fees, if not previously paid by credit card. Proof of payment must be included (see Application fees).

    NB:
    Documents received by fax or e-mail will not be accepted.
    Any application that is incomplete or that does not comply with the rules and conditions will be refused.



  4. Application fees
    1. Application fees of $100 CAD can be paid:
      - By credit card on the Web site of the OSM International Composition Prize (www.composition.osm.ca);
      - By money order, certified cheque, or bank draft payable to the OSM International Composition Prize;
    2. Payment in Canadian funds only;
    3. Application fees are non-refundable.

  5. Deadline for submissions
    1. All material must be postmarked Friday, June 30, 2006, at the latest, and sent to:

    2. Late applications will be refused.

  6. Accommodation and travel
    1. Finalists agree to attend the finals as well as any rehearsals for said event;
    2. Travel and accommodation expenses for finalists and prizewinners will be assumed by the OSM.

  7. Juries' decisions
    1. Jury members only may award prizes;
    2. If jury members are aware that one of their students is participating in the OSM International Composition Prize, they have an obligation to inform the Prize organization;
    3. Jury members reserve the right not to award a prize;
    4. Organizers will publicize the names of the four finalists in October 2006. The names of non-finalists will not be made public;
    5. The juries' decisions are final and may not be appealed.
IMPORTANT
  • Prizewinners agree for their work to be performed, recorded, and broadcast by the OSM and the partners of the OSM International Composition Prize as stipulated in the description of prizes;
  • Prizewinners will not receive a fee for the premiere (if applicable) or for the broadcast of the finals and the Gala Concert;
  • Prizewinners agree for their name and image (namely, the photograph) to be used without remuneration for publicity and promotional purposes by the OSM International Composition Prize;
  • In signing the application form, the composer agrees to abide by all the rules and conditions of the OSM International Composition Prize and to accept the juries' decisions, which are final and may not be appealed.
  • Orchestral Material

    1. If the work retained for the finals has been revised, it is the composer's responsibility to ensure that the OSM has the orchestral material in its possession at least 12 weeks prior to the finals;
    2. In the event that there is no orchestral material available for one of the works retained for the finals, the OSM International Composition Prize will, at its own expense, undertake to create the necessary material.

    Return of material
    Scores and recordings of works not retained for the finals will be returned at the composer's written request and expense, during a period of up to six months following the finals of the Prize.

    Scores, recordings, and performances pf prizewinning works The composer agrees to indicate clearly in any score of the work, booklet accompanying recordings of the work, and programs of concerts in which the work is performed the following:
    This work [or the full name of the composition] was awarded the 2007 Orchestre symphonique de Montréal International Composition Prize's Olivier Messiaen International Prize;
    or
    This work [or the full name of the composition] was awarded the 2007 Orchestre symphonique de Montréal International Composition Prize's Promise Prize;
    or
    This work [or the full name of the composition] was awarded the 2007 Orchestre symphonique de Montréal International Composition Prize's Claude Vivier National Prize;
